Stop Polishing the Dashboard and Just Drive
You can sing, "The Wheels on the Bus" while reading this; it'll help, I'm sure.
If I had a nickel for every time a brilliant professional told me they were “almost ready” to launch, I’d be retired on a beach in Bora-Bora instead of building this community in Las Vegas.
Most people our age don’t fail because they aren’t smart enough or don’t have the skills. They fail because they’re waiting for a feeling of certainty that is never going to show up.
The “Productive” Procrastination Trap
You know the drill. You’re “researching.” You’re buying the latest Substack masterclass, tweaking your logo for the tenth time, and reading every “how-to” guide on the internet.
You feel busy. You feel like you’re making progress.
But let’s be real: You’re running on a treadmill. You’re sweating, but you’re in the exact same spot you were six months ago.
Clarity isn’t something you find in a book or a course.
Clarity is the prize you win for actually doing the work.
“Gasp- Did he just say that?” Yeah, I know, it doesn’t help all the clarity course sellers.
You can’t steer a car that’s sitting in park. You’ve got to get the wheels turning—even if you’re just driving around the block—before the steering wheel starts to matter.
The Ego Hang-up: Being a Rookie Again
Why do we wait? It’s usually not because we need more info. It’s because we’re scared.
The Status Fear: We’ve spent 30+ years being the “expert.” The idea of being a beginner again—of posting something that might get zero likes or making a “rookie” mistake—feels like a punch to the gut.
The Corporate Ghost: We’re still worried about what the people from our “old life” think. Newsflash: They’re probably still stuck in the meeting you just escaped. Stop living for their approval.
The “Safety” of Research: Research is safe. It doesn’t reject you. It doesn’t fail. But it also doesn’t pay the bills or build a legacy.
The Encore Society Blueprint
You don’t need a 20-page business plan or a perfectly defined niche to start. You need a pulse and a tiny bit of momentum. Here’s the “Jim” way to get moving today:
Find a Real Pain: Forget “passions” for a second. What’s a problem you’ve solved a thousand times in your career? Someone out there is currently drowning in that exact problem.
Ship the “Version 0.1”: Write one post. Record one 60-second video. Send one email to a person you can help. Don’t wait for it to be “professional.” Wait for it to be done.
Build Your Own Leverage: The corporate world isn’t coming to save us. In fact, it’s actively trying to phase us out. The only true security is the reputation and the audience you build for yourself.
The Clock is Running
Every month you spend “getting ready” is a month you aren’t building compound interest on your brand. At this stage of the game, time is our most precious asset. Don’t let it leak away because you were too busy perfecting a website nobody is visiting yet.
I didn’t launch The Encore Society because I had it all figured out. I launched so I could figure it out.
The best time to start was yesterday. The second-best time is right now.
Put it in gear and get moving.
